Midi file import - empty dialog - Android phone

Postby spookyblue » Fri Jan 30, 2015 10:04 pm

I just purchased MBC today, and I'm really looking forward to using it to transcribe some music I wrote for my wife. However, I'm having difficulty importing my midi files.

I copied a handful of midi files to the application directory (Android/data/com.jellybiscuits.mBxComposer), but they do not appear in the "Midi In" dialog. I noticed there is also a "files" directory where the default songs are located. I moved my files there and fired up MBC again; the dialog is still empty. I've opened these files in other applications without issue, so I'm fairly sure there aren't any issues with the data.

I closed MBC before connecting to my PC (no choice - it force-closes when I connect a USB cable), so MBC was started fresh each time I moved the files and opened the "Midi In" dialog.

What am I missing?

Thanks for any information you can share that will help.

Hi

Do the files have the extension '.mid' ? Currently the midi importer filters the file list for *.mid only and would ignore '.midi'.

The Android/data/com.jellybiscuits.mBxComposer/files should be the correct location (I've updated that FAQ entry, it missed the 'files' directory) and I confirmed here that that location is correct on an Android device: the midi files in that directory were displayed in the load dialog for me, so if it's not the file extension I might need more information.

If it is the extension if you could rename for now and I'll fix it for a future build.

thanks,
grant

You're going to love this.

Yes, the extension is ".mid". Actually, they were all ".MID", so I changed the extensions to lower-case. They now appear in the dialog, and they loaded without issue. It didn't strike me until I looked at them again this evening. Being a developer as well, it was a pretty strong hunch that "MID" wasn't going to match.

These are very old files that were originally written in Midi Orchestrator Pro, which capitalized the extensions. They've traveled with me from PC to PC over the years, and I never really paid attention because Windows OS doesn't differentiate . In any case, there's our answer. Put midi files in Android/data/com.jellybiscuits.mBxComposer/files and make sure the extension is lower-case "mid".

Thank you for the quick reply. Looking forward to digging into this tonight. I'd also like to compliment you on the interface. UI design is a big part of what I do for a living. You've done a nice job of packing a lot of controls into a tight space, and they're still usable (on my older Android phone with a smaller screen). I also like your overlay approach to showing which buttons do what.

Thanks again,
Spookyblue
