•the kikkerland (and others) music box movements actually sound in the key of Ab, even though the notation strip shows key of C.
•MBC's sound output matches the pitch of the music box movement (key of Ab) but the midi mapping is probably standard so when you import something, it tries to put it where the pitch actually is.
The best work around I've found is to drag everything to the key of Ab in my DAW before I output the midi. You could also just compose in Ab. For me, I'm using the music box to teach students about composing in our summer music program and the key of C is better for beginners. I found that other issues cropped up if I imported from my DAW and then tried to move it in MBC, such as defaulting top notes it saw as out of range to high C.
This is really confusing for users. It would be really nice if you could make it so it transposes when it imports. And then maybe a disclaimer about what key of the music box movement is in. When I imported, it seemed to be playing the right pitches back in MBC even though it was showing it wrong on the staff. When you click and enter notes in MBC, it appears to sound in Ab. I don't have students compose directly in MBC because it's too tempting for them to randomly click notes on the page instead of actually giving thought to using composing principles. Besides that, I find it a little awkward and not musically intuitive to compose directly in MBC instead of on an instrument.
I really love this program! I hope this input helps.
